History of Taney's Costume Shop LLC

Taney's Costume Shop is Northeastern Pennsylvania's largest full-service theatrical store. Selling and renting costumes, as well as selling costume accessories, hats, wigs, masks, props, professional make-up, flags, banners, poles and balloons. It first opened its doors in 1926. The original owner was Pierce L. Taney - a farmer from Wapwalapen, Pennstlvania. In the early years - and during the hayday of Vaudeville - Mr. Taney supplied costumes and make-up to the shows produced in Scranton and WIlkes-Barre. These shows often had famous stars and would practice and test new material before going on to New York City. He was also known for being an amateur magician. Later, in the 1930s, he added novelties and flags to the store.

The store's original location was 648 North Washington Avenue in Scranton, across from Cooper's restaurant. Mr, Taney did business at this location until 1972 when he moved to its present location at 1406 N. Washington Ave. Mr. Taney passed away shortly after the move (1974) and the business was acquired by James O'Hora.

Mr. O'Hora had four years of college in business and costume design in addition to a Pennsylvania Hair and Make-up license. He was trained in make-up under Bob Kelly and James Cola of ABC Studios in New York City. In 1979 and 1980, Mr. O'Hora doubled the size of Taney's Costume Shop by adding an addition to the store for costume rentals. Over the last 35 years Mr. O'Hora has worked on everything from television, movies, print work and stage. He gives make-up seminars at local colleges and has himself been on TV and the stage.

In 2011, Taney's Costume Shop will be celebrating its 85th year in business and we look forward to many more years of serving the good people of Northeastern Pennsylvania!
